Currently, there is a shortage of student interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), and a lack of a well-trained teaching force in those areas. Austria and Slovakia, like many other industrialized countries, suffer under the known phenomenon that the affinity of the youth to STEM professions decreases with the degree of achieved wealth in the country. In the last several years, robotics in education has emerged as a superb tool for practical learning, not only of robotics itself, but also in general topics of STEM offering major new benefits to education at all levels. The RoboCoop is a unique project aimed at exploiting the multidisciplinary potential of robotics and establishing a cross-border educational activities for stimulating the students interest in the STEM at secondary school level. The main accent of the RoboCoop is to develop the activities, whose sustainable outcomes will be accessible and noticeable beyond the project period.

Generally, the broad application of the activities in the ecosystem will lead to the improvement of the STEM interest and skills among young people and educate a well-qualified workforce that in a long term significantly increases the attractiveness of a business location. On the other side, the “train the teacher” workshops should improve the robotics and ICT competences of the teachers and enable sustainable usage of these skills in the lectures after the project. Moreover, the robotics competitions included in the project will take place also regularly after the project. The project will contribute to their popularization on the regional level and enable to attract and motivate even more young people to practice robotics and ICT. Besides, the lecturer exchange activities serve on the one hand for promotion of the institutional achievements between the regions Vienna and Bratislava and on the other hand for networking. These networks and know-how exchange will be the basis of future scientific cooperation. Additionally, the outputs of the project are going to be public: concepts, methodologies, tutorials will be available on the educational platform which is going to be developed within the project implementation. After completion of the project, this platform will be further supported by PRIA and offered to other educational institutions in the region.

Finally, the political sustainability will be drafted within a policy paper foreseen in WP7 and it will ensure that the outputs are available for policy makers. The project involves all-important roleplayers that are needed to address the policymakers and promote sustainable policy changes based on the achieved results, involving regulatory bodies, who are authorized to guide the field’s education standards and develop curricula as well as universities and schools.

Project partners will also draft a clear sustainability plan to ensure the continuity of outputs by incorporating the improvements into existing activities of the participating institutions, overview their options for finding synergies with further EU funding programmes, and incorporate the actions and good practices achieved within the project into activities of organizations. The desired impact of the RoboCoop project will be to encourage, engage and retain more than 4000 school and university students and innovative educators in STEM at interregional level setting an positive example for broader national levels. Another positive impact will be the transfer of knowledge and exchange of experience between the regions as well as improved collaboration among partners after the completion of the project.
