The Robotics Day Vienna 2018 will be held as a part of the Europe-wide educational initiative Codeweek, which this year will be held for the 6th time. EU Code Week is a grass-roots movement that celebrates creating with code.
The idea is to make programming more visible, to show young, adults and elderly how you bring ideas to life with code, to demystify these skills and bring motivated people together to learn. The initiative was launched in 2013 by the Young Advisors for the Digital Agenda Europe. Robotics is seen in this context, as an important addition to Codeweek. Robotics is a combination of different technical fields such as mechanics and electronics including the programming activities as well.
Robotics is a popular, interesting and effective way for teachers as a teaching tool for introducing students to important areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths curricula. It enables users to discover exciting topics such as movement, navigation, coordination, grasping, audio and video processing, cognition and recognition, and many others. It can also promote the development of systems thinking, problem solving, self-control, and teamwork skills. In this context, especially mobile robots can be used as a motivating and interesting tool to study machine design and construction, software, as well as communication systems. Moreover, abstract programming logic is made more accessible through playful learning with robots. The Robotics Day has two major goals:
The Robotics Day Vienna 2018 project includes organizing the Robotics Day at the HTL Technisches Gewerbemuseum (TGM) as part of the Europe Code Week in October 2018. It is scheduled to run from 10:00 to 18:00 hrs to enable school classes to visit the event during the mornings as well as afternoon classes.
